The Old Days are coming back again

Assalam Alikom wa rahmat ALLAH
Peace and Blessings be upon you

Hello Everybody

A typical 486/DX PCWell, “It’s all coming back to me now”, like Celien Dion said in here famous song. I just remember my Old days with using PC and this was because of something I’ll tell in the next post incha’a ALAAH.

I started using PC since 1990 when I was 15 years old @ school lab. It was something new for me in this time, so I was totally attracted to it. I used to work in it in school until I finished high school and join college by 1994.

.:: My 1st PC ::.
When I entered college, it was the suitable time to have my own PC. Until now, I still remember my 1st PC which goes back to the year 1994. Its configuration was very funny if we compare it to 2005’s, however it was something up-to-date in this time. Take a look and youll get what I mean:

  • Motherboard: based on the Intel technology which i don’t remember right now
  • CPU : based on Intel 486 DX chipset @ 100MHz clock speed
  • Display Card: VGA card based on Intel chipset @ 1MB capacity
  • Monitor: TVM @ 14″ screen size
  • RAM: King Stone @ 8 MB EDO RAM
  • Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar @ 1.0 GB disk capacity
  • Floppy Drive: Sony 3.5″ drive
  • Keyboard + Mouse: they were connected to serial ports not USB like today
  • Sound Card: Compatible SoundBlaster card

I remember that there was something called in the case called “Turbo Button”, when you press it to boost up the PC speed from the normal mode ( @ 66 MHz ) to the full mode ( @ 100 MHz )

I remember that my Hard Disk was considered very new as the normal trend here was using the 512 MB capacity. Same for the display card, as 1MB video card memory was new. Same also for the RAM which was normally 4 MB.

:: Microsoft MS-DOS + Windows 3.11 ::

MS-DOS 6.22 LogoNo need to mention that the OS was MS-DOS for sure; I used to work on the traditional MS-DOS version 5.0, and when they released MS-DOS 6.22 it was something great for people.

To play games, we used to edit the ( Autoexec.bat + Config.ini ) settings to add the proper SoundBlaster variables. It was very normal to run the AutoCAD 12 under DOS and I saw the 3D Studio under DOS too. 3D Studio is the parent of 3D MAX which we know today.

A typical Windows 3.11In parallel, I was depending on the Windows 3.11 family. It was something great to use GUI commands instead of the DOS commands.

Later, when Microsoft released Windows 95, it was great but i couldn’t run it on my PC the applications run very slow .. so I used to make a trick; I placed the ( C:\Windows\win.com ) command in the autoexec.bat file, so my PC launch Windows 3.11 automatically and not to wait at the MS-DOS mode to type it at the command prompt … [ LOL ]

.:: My 2nd PC ::.
A typical Microsoft Windows 98 DesktopIn 1998, It was time to make an upgrade to face the needs of my college work, so I got my 2nd PC which was configured as follows:

  • Motherboard: based on the Intel BX chipset
  • CPU : based on Intel Pentium II chipset @ 333MHz clock speed
  • Display Card: AGP card based on Intel i740 chipset @ 8MB capacity
  • Monitor: TVM @ 15″ screen size
  • RAM: KingStone @ 32 MB DIMM RAM
  • Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar @ 6.4 GB disk capacity
  • Floppy Drive: Sony 3.5″ drive
  • CD: Sony CD-ROM @ 8X or 16X as I remember
  • Keyboard + Mouse: they were connected to serial ports not USB like today
  • Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster 32 Bit + Multimedia speakers
  • Modem: Rockwell Modem @ 56Kb speed

This one was pretty good enough for my civilization to upgrade from the DOS Era to Windows 9X/NT Era :)

Please don’t laugh, and wait for the next post to explain why did I remember those memories right now :)

NB: More Info about various operating systems can be found @ Wikipedia
