Underneath the Shooting

Few days passed since the tragedian shooting took place in Fort Hood and it is clear that ignorance by ‘Islam’ and ‘Muslims’ is the theme of this period. Nevertheless, I am not going to participate in the “attacking/defending” scenario which I described in my previous post.

I am rather concerned by going behind Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's action without any intention for legitimating since what happened is labelled under crime and betrayal from someone that requires punishment by the corresponding authorities regardless his faith and his race.

Analyse That

United States of America and Fort Hood ShootingLet me start by highlighting that despite we still know nothing about what is really inside the shooter's head till investigation show up, I have three points to ponder with you and welcome your insights if you wish, which are:

  1. his citizenship status;
  2. his ranking position;
  3. his linking to radicals.

Point One: He is an American citizen with high education, good job and was raised on the soil of the states not just an immigrant which means that this has nothing to do with hating America because of his roots or religion but rather something else went with him.

Point Two: Initial reports told about problems he had because of the pressure applied on his shoulder either for being anti-war or harassment. In fact, I do not fully buy this not only because many people are anti-war who will have other ways to express this but mainly because of his career as a physician in army who is supposed to be trained for facing this and cure people from non-physical troubles. Nevertheless, even if he had mental troubles that let him went to the end like this, how come that his leaders did not notice any kind of symptoms in any ‘follow-up report’ since he is not a civilian but an army officer?

Point Three: Initial reports also mentioned that FBI was investigating his suspicious internet activity as an army officer so why do not this lit a red alarm? I do not know whether he is following the ideology of radicals or the worst that he has been in touch with them, however again I wonder about the ‘follow-up reports’ since he is an army officer not a civilian!

The Division Bell

I think this tragedy is an evidence for error(s) that happened; something that need more investigations to understand and thus to prevent in the future by fixing the error(s), not just braking at both his roots and religion. What happened with all tragedian aspects of the shooting cannot be a way to condemn and portray millions of Arab and/or Muslims American citizens who are living on the soil of the states either being civilians or serving the army of their country.

On the other hand, if people want to educate themselves away from stereotyping, do not just rely on the media and go for resources either books, Islamic centres, or trustworthy sites about Islam. No problem if you know nothing since nobody knows everything about whatever subject(s) but the worst is when you just follow the wave of generalising.

Finally, I am placing these ramblings in a loud voice since our dear folks on different media-outles have not spent good effort for analysing what happened in a rational way but rather their efforts and enthusiasm were targeting to ring the fake bells of stereotyping which I elaborated in the previous post entitled “Tragedy and Stereotype”.

Tragedy and Stereotype

It is always sad when the news tell about killing people who became just numbers in their corresponding reports that explain a story. This is what I felt today, Friday 6th, while reading about the shooting in both Fort Hood and Orlando in the USA. I however pause a little bit at the actions/reactions in the tragedy of Fort Hood from all sides.

Mass-Media Effect

I shall start by placing my condolence for the families of the victims since what happened is a ‘tragedy’ indeed, since nothing can express it other than this. However suddenly we have been flooded by hatred story-lines and tweets in the form of “attacking/defending” where media highlighted on the roots of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan who is the suspect in Fort Hood's shooting versus the defending from Arab and Muslims organisations in USA that denies the link between Arab, Muslims and and Terrorism.

Don't Hear, Don't See, Don't SpeakI am not surprised for the way majority of media-outlets deal when Arabs and/or Muslims are involved either by focusing on their ethnic, religious and racial background or portraying all of them with terrorism. Take a look at the various articles that mentioned the story in the from of the suspect's religious background, the way that the suspect deal in a Mosque, his faliure to have a religious girl to match with him from the mosque to marry which later escalated to the extreme of Jihad in Fort Hood and Palestinian terrorim of the suspect.

C'mon! Needless to mention that media do not usually deal with other crimes as they did in this case but that is not my only reason to feel sick; I mainly feel so because this represents direct and indirect incitations for community members against each others which is a sign of unhealthy actions and mentalities that has nothing to do with coexsisting principals by fixing the common stereotyped images against Arab, Muslims or both either being American citizens or not.

Three Wise Monkeys

Furthermore, I understand that in the time of crises like this one, 'fair media' call for investigations to know what happened, do not jump for results before they appear and finally call for compensating from the killer according to the law after accusing. This scenario is supposed to move in parallel with supporting the whole community regardless their religious, ethnic, cultural and political background, not in a narrow-minded way like that!

On the other hand, I am always wondering about these 'fair media' which ignore other people who are being killed everywhere in the world; I have neither heard anything about making any investigation for the roots of their non-Arab and/or non-Muslim killers nor placing any kind of condolence for their families because they are not that juicy in their eyes.

For that that matter, my heart not only goes for victims everywhere regardless their faith or race but also goes for alive victims too and wonders about when people start to educate themselves?!

9/11: A Walk to Remember

It was the afternoon on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 when I saw TV -from a quiet far distance- broadcasting what appeared as ruins.

At the first glance, I thought it was a promo for another Hollywood movie like 'Volcano' however heading towards the screen I figured it out; attacks are real and hence the tragedian September 11 begins.

9/11I still remember my first impression; totally shocked while telling myself: "Oh My God! Pandora has opened her box". Seven years later, it seems nobody yet has the ability to close such damn box which makes me wonder: where are we heading to?

My worries, as Muslim Human being living in the 21st century under the shadows of the Western Civilisation, can be shaped on three layers segregated as follows:

Layer 1 - Human Interaction: Humans are persons no matter what the race, colour, faith or religion is. Therefore, all what had happened can not be described except as atrocities against civilians either who died in USA or who are died in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere.

Nevertheless, death toll is counting numbers of fatalities but actually they were people; members of families that still struggle to forget their sadness. C'Mon! I always wonder about the mentalities that can not see the ugliness of the destroyed places and smell the smoke aroused from the ashes of died people yet the wonder disappears when I see the beast of selfish rise.

Layer 2 - Misunderstanding: There's a problem among some Muslims regarding the wrong and radical interpretations for Islamic manuscripts; Holy Qur'an & Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) Sunnah. Such interpretations were carried out by what so called 'Islamists' who claim representing the only 'right way' for Islam.

In fact, they manipulate texts to serve their own ideology that promote a rigid radical perspective which simply contradict with the principal core of Islam as Allah Almighty (GOD) revealed Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) with to Mankind.

This definitely sheds light over why I prefer to use the term 'Radicals' not 'Islamists' because if a group committed atrocities in the name of Judaism or Christianity, can we call him 'Christiansts' or 'Judaismists'?

C'Mon! There is a complete difference between the real Ideology and how some apply it and you can refer to my elaborations over I-MAG Magazine in the article entitled 'Islam: Between Ideology and Application'

Layer 3 - The Generalising Sin: A wrong stereotyped image -mainly depends on accepting the previously mentioned interpretations- has been modelled to render 'Islam' as source of terrorism and 'Muslims' as terrorists via mainstream media.

Actually I wonder how come that spotlights are placed over here yet same lights are usually dimmed when it comes to present the other side of the moon which is Islam 'as it is from Allah' not 'as some people want it to be'

C'Mon! You can not judge till hearing from both sides of the story yet it I important to have the choice to look, listen and learn!

Having said this, now it is time to merge such layers. In a nutshell, the path to reach the light at the end of the tunnel is applying 'Justice' in our wild wide world not double standards via whomever. Such justice can not be achieved unless personnel, administrations organisations and nations try to understand their differences and learn how deal with not to force others to follow what they believe in!
