Review Gees: Bloggers Unite for Refugees!
[This blog entry is my post for participating in the Blogger Unite for Refugees event in 2008]

Bloggers Unite for Refugees (2008)
We always do math on daily routine, so it is normal adding 16 to 51 to get a sum of 67, but wait a minute: what about identifying this number; 67 roses, guns or what?
Well, it is 67 Million people! Yes; this number is the UNHCR‘s estimation for refugees plus internally displaced people (IDP) in our world as of 2007 according to “The UN Refugee Agency (2007 Global Trends) report” [pdf link]
Oh my God, I am horrified not merely because of quaintly which is terribly scary, but mainly by what lies beneath this scary number; sixty seven million humans just like me and you who may differ in the colors but share the same suffer! Hereby it is not a number anymore; rather it is a giant mirror that reflects our state of mind on planet Earth in the 21st century!
It is notable tragedy that after less than two years from 2008, we shall enter the 2nd decade of our 3rd Millennium of living on planet Earth yet I still wonder about the mentalities behind committing atrocities against other people just because they are not sharing the same point of view regardless the race or religion! Hereby, the tragedy is doubled when we know that that both women and children are those who always suffer a lot during this because of the barbarian acts committed against them for no particular rational reason that can convince any human being except the ugly side of the human nature and how our human intellect is absent.
C’mon! I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic so despite being aware about the role played by Unite Nations, governments, NGOs and civil society to overcome these actions. I do believe that in addition to supporting their role, my role as an individual is to hold a torch because only light is capable of defeating the darkness! For that matter, as a Muslim personnel, I do believe we are born that we may know each other and understand each other; something that cannot be implemented unless we are aware about our differences and try to learn how to deal with them especially when it come to the cultural-based differences.
“You are dreaming about Utopia”, someone says.
“No, I am not” is my reply as Utopia shall not be found on planet Earth because we are just humans who are subjected to rise and fall plus right and wrong; however isn’t strange that we are achieving technological development that is not comparable with humanitarian one?
Finally, I am wondering whether there is any hope that one day we review this? Hereby, this is not the only wonder because it is followed by another one about when will people on Earth grow up to be humans?!

It’s such an amazing number of people – roughly the same as the complete population of France or Italy or the UK. If you thought of the whole population of the UK being refugees, it would be beyond belief, and yet here we are with people barely paying attention to the world\’s refugee problem.

You express my feelings too.
You write:
“Oh mon dieu! After less than two years we shall entre the 2nd decade of our 3rd Millennium yet I still wonder about the mentalities behind committing atrocities against other people just because they are not sharing the same point of view, regardless the race or religion!”
The first years into the first decade of the 3rd Millenium brought some big disappointments. I really had thought, and had cherished some hopes that things would change in a peaceful manner. No. I wonder if some evolution-specialists could give some real helpful advice on how to fix the barbarian nature of man.

It is truly hard to believe that we humans have let the world sink to such pathetic levels where millions are driven from their homes for ethnic or other reasons. Man is really nothing more than a barbarian pretending to be civilised.

“I still wonder about the mentalities behind committing atrocities against other people just because they are not sharing the same point of view, regardless the race or religion!”
I wonder the same

This is such an eye opener. Its so absurd to think that alot of people can’t still accept other’s views and ethnicity.

You remark about how technology to do amazing things has not typically involved doing amazing things for humanitarian reasons. I hope that I can see this changing! Good work!

they are horrifying statistics Hicham !!!
there is a need for balance in this unbalanced world that we live in …

Me too.

You are totally right about Utopia. I used to spend hours thinking about the perfect society and I know realize how foolish I was. The human nature will never allow any type of Utopia to survive… There will always be wars and fights over money, and therefore tons of refugees …

67 Million people have to leave their homes for survivorship! Why we can’t live compatible on the only earth?
I do believe if everybody do the same as you, hold a torch to light the darkness, the world will find its hope.

Mans heart is evil, it has to be.
November 15th, 2008 @ 09:54
Wow, they really are scary statistics arent they? Thanks for writing your post and educating me some more. There really is a great deal of unbalance and unfairness in the world and it’s up to us to keep the playing field far more level than it is.
November 16th, 2008 @ 19:13
This is absolutely such an eye opener for me. There still lots of things out there that we take for granted – things like ethnicity and race. Well, lets hope the world come together and live as one.
Nice site by the way

Reading about wars between countries always makes me feel sad. Why are men keep on killing other men? We are created alike and equal to each other so why can’t we respect and love one another? What’s happening in Gaza these days is really saddening and alarming. And all we could do is pray for those people…

It is impressive. The Blogosphere is much more then just a phenomena, it is a process that is continuing to grow daily. In such a way it becomes more stronger. The idea is to find out how to positively use this force to help others. Bloggers are the voice of freedom.
