Roundup for October 2009

I thought about making some change to my blogging style on the 1st day of a new month by summing up the posts I published in the previous one in the form of story-line so here is my trial that hopefully (inshallah) will continue.

Synopsis: blog entries roundup for October 2009

Synopsis: blog entries roundup for October 2009

Story Line: Once upon a time there was a blogger named “Hicham Maged” who acquired his domain-name in October 2006. He celebrated the 3rd anniversary by “Blue: A New Look” and “Blog Milestone: Comments.” Furthermore, although he does not worry about, it was nice to shed some lights on “Alexa in BloggingLand” and pointed out to “Mashable’s 2009 Open Web Awards.”

In fact, tech-posts are not the main focus, so despite being surprised by the 2009 noble prize nomination for peace, he discussed the “High Hopes on Obama” and what lies behind this step. In parallel, he wondered and pondered about his local society in “Common Grounds in Human Nature” which seems valid for the global society on Earth.

As for individuals, he shed some lights on “And Marriage is -“, sexual harassment in “Shahyasah ya Fandem” and going behind the niqab controversy in “Modesty of the Mind” which leaded to wonder about the “Beauty of the Mind.”

Finally, he did not forget what happened back in July, thus “Marwa: A Call for Justice” was published 2 weeks before the trial. Last but not least, he wondered about “Egypt and Mustafa Mahmoud” when the later died at the end of the month.

End of the story: “It is November! Happy November and enjoy your blogging experience”

Egypt and Mustafa Mahmoud

Today in the morning, Egypt lost one of its intellectuals; the doctor, writer, author, thinker, and philosopher “Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud (Arabic: د/ مصطفى محمود)” who passed away at 88-year-old (1921-2009)

Egypt and Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud (1921-2009)

Egypt and Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud (1921-2009)

I usually do not stop by the death of anybody; however I believe when it comes to someone like Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, we are called to pause and go behind the scenes of this event as I usually do over my blog.

In Egypt, many fake stars twinkle in its sky whereas real ones fade away in silence at least from the mass media. Hereby, I did not mean announcing his death or an obituary that usually placed in similar occasions; rather I meant how media focus on shallow mentalities in their life and ignore intellectuals and thinkers.

In the light of this elaboration, think about the following two points:

  1. Cerebration: Regardless your position from his thoughts, it us unfair to deny that he was thinking, debating, wondering and pondering on his own, which was reflected in his cerebration either in forms of written books or his TV program “Science and Faith (Arabic: العلم والإيمان)” that was aired on Channel 2 of the Egyptian TV in the 80s of the past 20th century.
  2. Interaction: People are different no matter what, hence it is normal either to agree or disagree with their opinion. Hereby, I highlight on an important point that seems missing in our societies that opinions are subjected to debate and change by other opinions which may lead to create a healthy atmosphere for people to live and advance.

Unfortunately on the contrary, you find the leading atmosphere is to deal with opinions in a shallow way that starts with love or hate people and escalates to the verbal plus physical threaten either from governments or members of civil society regardless their cultural and political orientation.

I am aware about our problems very well however since people are different therefore I am not calling for another copy of the late Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud in the same way; this is impossible because everybody is unique personality according to the context he (and she) raised in.

Hereby, I am looking forward to reaching the state when people can challenge their minds and go for implementing their human intellect in Egypt and Arab-Muslim world away from both stereotyping, ignorance, and extremism either to the right or to the left. This is a basic component in the mentality of both individuals and groups who want to move straight forward as this shall lead us to reach the common grounds as I elaborated before or else this unhealthy atmosphere will never change!

Common Grounds in Human Nature

I am always wondering about the human nature and feels like exploring its complexity over my blog. Hence, I started a journey in previous blog entries for achieving this goal; the first phase was wandering in the wonderland of human nature, the second phase was booking places under the sun of human nature, the third phase was trying to understand the language of human nature, the fourth was dealing with sorry in the human nature. Here we reach my 5th phase where I wonder about the aggression applied by people in whatever situation and how people can reach the common grounds in-between.

Common Grounds in Human Nature

Common Grounds in Human Nature

Society and Common Grounds

Any society is formed of collective social groups. If we trace them back, we shall reach the individual. Each person then has his (and her) unique mind that is formulated according to the following three factors:

  1. Pedagogy: which is acquired by raising up from parents and relatives;
  2. Education: which is acquired by attending formal and informal studies plus own readings;
  3. Cultural Context: where we live in and affect us either positively or negatively.

These factors combine together with the soul of every individual persons and the resultant force is “the personality” that you face while dealing with people.

On the other hand, we used to define “good person versus bad person” according to our vision for how this person treats people around him (and her) within the social group. Of course, the relationships inside any society is not only about being good versus bad because this is simplification; it is more complicated since it deals with how people apply their behavior within the whole social group.

In these social groups that gather to form the whole nation, some people applies aggression because it seems they are only fond of their minds which they believe had reached the “ultimate truth” and hence all other people should follow them so if they did not, then they must be forced to do so and be their followers.

In my perspective, this behavior clearly reflects tunnel vision of mentalities and nothing more. Consequently, this might explains the reasons behind conflicts that we see in many situations regardless the case; this is a common attitude which starts with discussions between people in whatever case and end with ideologies itself which start by discussions and escalates to reach the exclusion state either verbally or physically upon others who do not share them their vision.

This trend is notable in many nations generally and in the Arab-Muslim world particularly where you find it reflected in the aggression with its verbal and physical forms that reach its peak value when some groups – especially extremists – who try to legalize this acts either from the right, left or any ideology in the name of whatever: race, faith or culture!

DUH!

Reaching for Common Grounds

Inside every single nation there are some codes that people adhere to since they agreed about or this is how things are supposed to be. If people have problem with, they are called to go through intellectual discussions in order to reach a better state. This means that the integration between people regardless their faith or political ideology is the keystone for achieving this through the two main components of any society: government plus the civil society.

Unfortunately, on contrary to this concept that understands our common grounds, you find discussions usually missed the main goal for any society which is simply its development and rather every group tries to proof that they are the best while others understand nothing in general. Even worse, when they keep on quarreling about topics that are not that urgent if we look to the whole picture of the development process and hence you find every group calls for its own ground.

In the light of my elaborations, we shall discover how they are applicable on two scales:

  1. Minor Society Scale: that deals with human interaction between members of same society;
  2. Major Nations Scale: that deals with human interaction between members of different societies;

For that matter, members of any society are humans, so our human intellect can pave the road for reaching better understanding when we use our minds in a rational way aside from stereotypes and misconceptions, while working on on de-stereotyping the image both on the minor or the major scales.

In a nutshell, I am shedding lights on the common grounds that are usually forgotten due to an attitude that I see as a core problem in our societies which makes me wonder when we will overcome this!
