Roundup for November 2009

This is the monthly report #2 in the form of story line for posts written in November where I covered various issues.

Synopsis: blog entries roundup for November 2009

Synopsis: blog entries roundup for November 2009

Story Line: One of them was following-up the tragedian case of Marwa el-Sherbiny on “Justice and Stereotype” that focused on the aftermath of the trial for her murderer in Dresden, Germany.

Another tragedy was Fort Hood shooting in United States where “Tragedy and Stereotype” joined forces to produce this horrible act. In complementary to my commentary, I tried to go “Underneath Fort Hood Shooting” few days later, since media as usual has nothing to focus on except the religious background of the gunman. In parallel, I also discussed few “Civilians Matters” regardless the conflict and here I focused the non-stop tragedy of Palestinians and how they are being targeted by Israeli forces aside from any political chaos.

On a different field, although I am neither football fan nor following matches, I was surprised by the aftermath of Egypt and Algeria WorldCup 2010 qualifying matches, and hence I expressed this within an Arabic post entitled “هيستيريا الساحرة المستديرة” that can be translated into hysterical football. You know what? The way people deal in this world either in these examples or others made me wonder about how you can find yourself as if watching the “Psycho Circus of Human Nature” everywhere!

Well, the coin has two sides so aside from problematic events, weird news were circulating about the period of “Egypt under Cambyses II” and hence I wondered too. Furthermore, there was an announcement for the event of “Kolena Laila 2009” that is calling Arab readers and bloggers to participate online and I wish many people can do so. On the other hand, Muslims worldwide were celebrating the blessed days of “The Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha” as part of their following their religion.

What else? November rains were falling and so do stereotypes on Muslims, so this month could not leave us without more of them as we saw the Swiss referendum to ban minarets of mosques. I tried to go beyond meaning of this over “Flying with Black Wings” aside from the bigotry in our world.

Time-Out!

Last but not least, if you love music generally and Arabic ones particularly, you are mostly welcome to join me on “Arabic Music Respite” and free your mind from anything else.

End of the story: “It is December! The last month of 2009 which means the new year is knocking the doors. For my Arabic readers, I remind you with Rouh ya November (Arabic: روح يا نوفمبر – تعالى يا نوفمبر) from an old Arabic movie. Check my twitter for that matter :)

Flying with Black Wings

Yesterday on Sunday, portion of Swiss citizens cast their vote on a referendum to ban building minarets on mosques in Switzerland. The results came as a surprise for this strange vote which was carried out in response to the political calls by the far-right-wing “Swiss People Party (SVP)” since June 2008 to legislate a local constitution that forbid such constructions.

The keystone to understand what went wrong is to pause and analyze since neither exaggerating nor extreme anger can help, so let me ask a simple question: what made citizens in 22 out of 26′s cantons with a 57% to cast their vote for the Swiss Minaret ban referendum? The answer and beyond is what I am trying to do in this post so be my guest in reading.

SwissBan: A New Brand

Firstly, I shall start with saluting the folks at SVP for their genuine acts that pave the road for establishing a new brand for Switzerland in the 21st century called SwissBan; a new third millennium’s invention that is fabricated in contrary to the normal human trend which aims to understand and respect the variety of people on planet Earth through this Islamophobic way of thinking.

Swiss Minaret Attack Game

Swiss Minaret Attack Game

Bravo! Let me hear the applause!

Aside from sarcasm, the direct answer for my question placed at the beginning of this post is Swiss Democracy which reflects the will of people. Well, this is true but I beg to differ because democracy – in my point of view – is not a goal but a tool which means it can be used right or wrong, and hence, when people vote, they do so according to their assumptions that was formulated and directed by the media, politicians and so on.

Consequently, the fear of Islam and Muslims, known as Islamophobia, is the fuel for the ideology of the conservative right-wing parties to survive, expand in Europe since the 90s of the 20th century; hence in this case, the unconscious fear lead these people to cast their vote in this way while and their politicians are just flying with black wings of hate and ignorance.

For that matter, I am feeling sad for them; how they are affected by the tunnel vision of mentalities that see nothing but the wrong stereotyped image and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims and finally this has been reflected into nothing but racism in:

  1. the poster of SVP’s campaign which is discriminating Muslim women (attached pic);
  2. the game which was launched under the name “Minaret Attack” (attached pic);
  3. associating Switzerland’s national anthem and flag with the background of the game;
  4. symbolizing an Architectural element, the minaret, to serve their ill vision.

If these actions are not racism, then tell me what else can we identify? And hey, you make a wrong comparison by saying “look at your own backyard” because in Egypt and most of Arab-Muslim countries, despite the problems we face, we cannot even make such constitution to ban Churches and Synagogues as this Swiss minaret ban!

Furthermore, I am aware about the extreme acts done by some Muslims yet moderate people in our region do not accept this either to the right or to the left simply because this is not Islam but Muslims act; it is totally different! Nevertheless, even if we establish comparison, radicals and extremists are playing an important role in such vision here and there yet the circumstances are just different!

Obsession with Muslim Women

On the other hand, I cannot end reflections on Swiss minaret ban without returning back to the poster of the SVP’s campaign and here a simple question rise: why everybody have problem with Muslim women?

If we look for an answer, we need to digg through mentalities a little bit and we shall discover that radicals and extreme conservatives everywhere have this problem with women in general and Muslim Women in particular!

As for the poster, it is not only discriminating women, whether they wear niqab (burka) or not but also reflects the ignorance people have so please do not tell me about 1st or 3rd world thing because such categorization seems to fall down in the case of women and hey we are talking about Switzerland not another country! Hence, this is another way for flying with black wings through the Swiss Minaret Ban’s poster.

It not only about being wrong, ignorant for knowing nothing about Islam except from media and politicians, generalizing and stereotyping, but also about badly affecting the country’s image; instead of shedding more lights on liberty and human-rights that portrays Switzerland since many decades, some people choose to spent efforts in this genuine way that makes me recall previous elaborations about de-stereotyping the image on the minor scale; society and major scale; nations respectively!

Dears, by reaching this paragraph, you can easily identify a typical scenario for what any extreme right-wing can do in any country through hunting freedom of speech’s bird, misusing democratic acts or the vice-versa since the same destination is reached at the end of the day; when people do not understand what common grounds in human nature mean and follow the chaos of politicians with their tunneled vision.

In a nutshell, I am looking forward for Swiss people to re-evaluate what happened; it is not only whether law protect citizen’s rights or not, which is something important to debate and go for in the Swiss courts to correct for sure, but what is more important for me is that this fatal mistake should set up an alarm for not falling into the swamp of ignorance where nothing fill it but fear, anger and stupidity ~ Everywhere!

The Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha

Today is the 2nd day of Eid ul-Adha for the year 1430 according to the lunar “Islamic Hijri calendar (Arabic: التقويم الهجرى)” which coped with the year 2009 according to the “Georgian calendar (Arabic: التقويم الميلادي)”, so Muslims are passing by the blessed days of the Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha.

The Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha

The Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha

“Eid ul-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى)” is an Islamic festival that falls at the 10th day of “Dhul-Hijjah (Arabic: شهر ذو الحجة)” which is the 12th month of the Islamic calendar

In this Islamic festival, Muslims celebrate the commemoration of willingness of “Prophet Ibrahim [Abraham - (Arabic: إبراهيم - عليه السلام)]” to sacrifice his son “Prophet Ismail [Ishmael - (Arabic: إسماعيل - عليه السلام)]” for “The Almighty Allah (swt) [God - (Arabic: الله)]” and it usually lasts for 3 days from 10th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah at the end of the Hajj.

“The Hajj (Arabic: الحج)” is an annual pilgrimage to the city of Mecca and it occurs from 8th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah and it is considered as one of the five pillars of Islam. Moreover, these days are usually called “Ten Blessed Days of The Hajj plus Eid ul-Adha” where fasting all of them is not an obligation; however it is Sunnah especially on “Waqfat Arafat (Arabic: وقفة عرفات)” on the 9th day that precedes starting the Eid festivals.

Consequently, I usually read and think about the beauty of this verse from the Holy Quran that tell us portion of the story of the two Prophets: Abraham and his son Ishmael whom Arabs are his descendants, and how both Prophets had worked by revelation from The Almighty Allah (swt) – GOD – to raise the foundations of “Kaaba (Arabic: الكعبة الشريفة)” at the center of “Masjid al-Haram (Arabic: المسجد الحرام)” in Mecca, the Holy Muslim city:

{And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing} — [Holy Quran (Koran) Translation - 2:127]

On the other hand, I recall my article entitled “Haj: Enlighten Your Spirit” that was published couples of years ago over I-MAG Magazine where it deals with my reflections on The Hajj as one of the (5) five pillars of Islam.

Finally, I am ending this blog entry with placing my greetings for Muslims worldwide plus my prayers for a better world than what we see now, hopefully (inshallah) one day!
