Laila in La-La Land

Today I am saying bye-bye 2009; a year where good things and bad ones took place on various levels starting with the personal, passing by the national and ending with the global level. Generally speaking, among the few good things is the “Kolena Laila” event (3rd year) that I told you about few weeks ago and this is my blog entry at the end of the year and the end of the event too; so whether you are a regular reader or a new one I am welcoming you to my blog!

Laila: Cherchez La Femme

I used to mention over here how I am not happy with the status of women in our area due to the image people have about women, so my simple question is what lead us to this situation? Let us scratch the surface to reach for answers, hopefully!

Aside from generalizing which I do not like, I believe there is an atmosphere that support the attitude of extreme highlighting on the female parts of woman in the minds of people that is prevailing in our society.

This attitude is translated – consciously and unconsciously – into a behavior that focus on the body-related topics and thus you find it controlling various discourses regardless the orientation (left – middle – right) and the final status is that women had been categorized according to this into the two contradicting labels: “baby dolls versus root of all evil” for men which is another product for the extremely low ranked “hot or not” sexism categorization.

The implementation of this disgusting mental and physical segregation process is notable in the efforts that are being waisted – not spent – on quarreling about topics like:

  • how women should be killed for honor crimes;
  • what women should or should not wear;
  • young girls and the FGM (not only FC) crime in Africa/Middle East;
  • … the list seems an endless one!

I cannot understand this in terms of any rational way of thinking, so if we put our minds aside and go for irrationality , we shall simply discover the attitude of having women as a property of men in their minds and hence their presence as human being was reduced just as a female where as their mind is ignored after such minimizing process and women for that matter became socially oppressed by people regardless their orientation.

On the other hand, I do respect everybody’s personal belief; however in a country like Egypt where Islam is the religion of the majority, I am placing my critique about how sometimes – or many – people relate their actions to Islam and hence you find the both anti and pro discussions regarding the status of women and this lead to another stereotyped image that existed due to their actions not what Islam call for. This point is clear for people who try to understand Islam in a better way, not for those who believe in what others tell them regardless their orientation and whether they are Muslims or Non-Muslims.

You know what? Almighty Allah (swt) – GOD – had created us that we may know each other generally and in case of men and women specially. Consequently, I neither believe in generalizing nor extremism to any side and this means that the keystone to solve this problem is to understand our differences and coexist with them in a better way than we currently witness since many decades!

In a nutshell, my elaborations may explain the reasons behind why Laila went to La-La Land because some mentalities choose ignoring our human intellect – like modesty of the mind for example – while dealing women issues in our societies; hence let me clearly mention that women are human beings not only females, so if this fact seems hard for many people to understand since many decades, what seems harder for me is that we are still discussing this issue in the 21st century!

Beyond saving Earth!

I shall assume that nowadays in the 21st century we have successfully implemented a framework to preserve the climate change on planet Earth by decreasing the emissions of gases that previously lead to the greenhouse effect in the 20th century after our global leaders listened to a cry for Mankind on Earth since better late than never as it is known globally.

This is a great step for humanity since now we can live on a better clean planet and hence advance in a way that differs from the previous one throughout the history; however my question is a simple one: are we really living in a better clean planet as humans in this case? I am looking for answers in this blog entry.

Coexistence: Beyond saving Earth!

Coexistence: Beyond saving Earth!

Coexistence: Beyond saving Earth

On the physical level, the planet became cleaner than the past thus world health shall be better so no more calls for healing the world. Nevertheless on the physiological level, I am wondering about another kind of emissions of hate and disrespect gases between people because of the differences instead of love and respect gases.

A careful look on our overall history as humans in the past 20 centuries tell us that despite the continuous development on the technical level, we have not achieved a parallel development on the human one in terms of accepting our differences and to learn how to coexist with them; and this I see as a serious threat that is equal to the physical climate change threat.

I have discussed before how tunnel vision of mentalities make people blind enough for looking at the common grounds they share which is simply that we may know each other and cooperate with each other. On the contrary, you find humans regardless their religions and ideologies are still far from way for achieving such coexistence which I see is a must beyond saving Earth.

I emphasize on our human existence; that we are neither angels nor devils but humans, thus dreaming about an ideal state of smooth human interaction is not my point because there is no Utopia on Earth. Hereby, whatever your religion or ideology are, at the end of the day we are sharing common grounds of human nature either locally; people of the same country or globally; nations of different countries.

Verily, I do not like simplification of situations that it is all about “good people versus bad people” from the “ethical” and “religious” point of view; this is true but not the only reason because the higher the level of interaction, the more complexity of relations and more reasons are being evolved.

Consequently for me, beyond saving earth clearly means that all of us need to reach a state of mind where people understand their differences and know how to coexist with them in a better way than the existing one; nowadays every body accepts the stereotypes and misconceptions from whomever against whomever that lasts during the past 30 years particularly.

In a nutshell, I am simply wondering about when people start using their human intellect where their minds work in a rational way to help them in reaching enlightenment for de-stereotyping the image, existing together, respecting their differences either being social, cultural, religious, or ethnic and hence coexistence in the 21st century. May be this only happens on the intellectual level but it is still too slow for reaching the common level of people everywhere and here I mean all of us, not the usual segregation of the 1st versus the 3rd world since I am not sure about the validity of this categorization when it comes to dealing with stereotypes, misconceptions and ignorance worldwide!

A Cry for Mankind on Earth!

Today is the first day for the “United Nations Climate Change Conference” that takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark from the 7th to the 18th of December 2009, where the participants aim to reach another deal beyond the year 2012 after Kyoto Treaty. These participants are collation of the “Conference of Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)” and the “5th Meeting of Parties (COP 15 / MOP 5)” to the “Kyoto Protocol.”

The Two Sides of Human Development

At the threshold of the 21st century, there is a needed to set up an alarm for where Mankind is heading to exactly. Hence generally speaking, the development on Planet Earth since the industrial era that started in the 19th century had provided human beings with many facilities that helped them in moving straightforward.

This is good indeed; however the other side of the coin tells us about the pollution that caused the raising of other set of global environmental issues and hence, I see this occurred due to the following two reasons:

  1. we have not preserved our natural resources and;
  2. the industrial policies have not implemented a good strategy for decreasing side effects that rapidly increased in the 20th century.

This other side caused by pollution is the dark side which already affected both the health of people and hence many calls are rising for an emergency healing of the world on the short run. This might also help in increasing the global warming effect on the long run and other set of environmental problems due to increase in of the emission Carbon Dioxide gas (CO2) that has direct impact on the greenhouse effect on planet Earth which may lead to other environmental degradations.

Stand up to save Earth

In the light of this explanation, my message for this conference is simple: few months ago, I participated in the online event Earth Hour that aimed to send a message for this conference where leaders shall discuses the global warming climate problems that have direct impact on the environmental degradation and other global environmental issues.

Hence, I am wondering about the right time for making a cry for mankind to save planet Earth other than this one. Hence I am looking forward that they stand up for their responsibilities to preserve our future. Moreover, when he was awarded the Noble Peace Prize, high hopes on Obama meant that our world can get leaders who have vision; however this means – again – responsibilities from all and here I wish this will come true!

Facing Climate Change

On the other hand, it is notable that in the year 2008, Earth inhabitants passed 6.6 billion person according to the World-Bank statistics and this means serious efforts should be spent for reaching a better future for our Earth; not only by placing and implementing a framework for nations via this conference but also for reaching clean technologies that help in saving the future of Earth and this has nothing to do with conference as much as the strategy of industry, which is another cry for Mankind on Earth beside the conference.

I am aware about how some people think that global warming climate change is just exaggerating and here I recall Arabic (and a global) proverb which tell us about how “Prevention (or protection) is better than cure.” This simply means it is stupid to wait till a tragedy happen then we start looking for alternatives to solve it and here I wonder about the meaning of science we have developed as humans if it was not implemented for the sake of better future!

In a nutshell, may be this is a blog entry that cannot help but at least it is a cry for Mankind on Earth: look for our past and present and tell me how much money had been spent on stupid things like nuclear weapons, and how other had been spent on hating people because other do not like them? Hence, I am sharing my thoughts clearly that we need to spend more money on things that help people which means to stop thinking on the short-run and in a narrow-minded way because it is not only about us; rather our children and their children shall succeed us on this planet, so what exactly are we leaving for them?
