Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

You asked about namaste on another brother's blog. I've reposted my answer below for you too

I used to be Hindu once upon a time, but as you've probably guessed from my salam, I am now a Muslim.

Hindu's usually greet each other (or at least people older than them) with the word "namaste", much as Muslims give salams. I had been doing that for a number of years without a second thought, and it only occurred to me to check it's meaning a few of months back.

It turns out that it is shirk!

It is understood to have two meanings:

"I bow down to the Divine in you"
from Namas - bow, reverential salutation (from "Nam" -humbly submitting) Te - to you, acknowledging the divine presence in another.

and also:

"I honor that place in you where the whole Universe resides. And when I am in that place in me and you are in that place in you, there is only one of us."

Of course you still must be polite and respectful of everyone, but this technically makes it haram for you to say namaste to someone.

Personally, when someone says namaste to you I'd encourage you to smile warmly, perhaps give them a hug and tell them how glad you are to meet them. Just coz you can't say namaste doesn't mean that you love them any less.

It turns out that it is shirk!

It is understood to have two meanings:

“I bow down to the Divine in you”
from Namas - bow, reverential salutation (from “Nam” -humbly submitting) Te - to you, acknowledging the divine presence in another.

and also:

“I honor that place in you where the whole Universe resides. And when I am in that place in me and you are in that place in you, there is only one of us.”
