Egypt and Mustafa Mahmoud
Today in the morning, Egypt lost one of its intellectuals; the doctor, writer, author, thinker, and philosopher ‘Mustafa Mahmoud (Arabic: مصطفى محمود)’ who passed away at the age of 88 years old.
I usually do not stop by the death of anybody however I believe that when it comes to someone like him, we are called to pause a little bit and go behind the scenes as I usually do here especially in our country where many fake stars twinkle in its sky whereas real ones fade away in silence at least from the media, and here I am not talking about announcing his death or an obituary that usually placed in similar occasions. Hence think about the following two points:
- Cerebration: Regardless your position from his thoughts, it us unfair to deny that he was thinking, debating, wondering and pondering on his own, which was reflected in his cerebration either in forms of written books or his TV program “Science and Faith (Arabic: العلم والإيمان)” that was aired on ‘Channel 2’ of ‘Egyptian TV’ in the 80s of the past 20th century.
- Interaction: People are different no matter what, hence it is normal either to agree or disagree with their opinion, and here I highlight on an important point that seems missing in our societies that opinions are subjected to debate and change by other opinions which may lead to create a healthy atmosphere for people to live and advance.
Unfortunately on the contrary, you find that the leading atmosphere is dealing with opinions in a shallow way that starts with ‘love/hate people’ and escalates to the verbal & physical ‘threaten’ either from government(s) or members of civil society regardless their cultural and political orientation.
I am aware about our problems very well however since people -again- are different therefore I am not calling for another copy of the late Mustafa Mahmoud in the same way, rather I am looking for the time when people can challenge their minds and go for implementing them in Egypt and Arab/Muslim world away from both stereotyping, ignorance, and extremism either to the right or to the left.
This is a basic component in the mentality of a person and people who want to move straight forward and this might lead us to reach the ‘common grounds’ that I discussed before in details within the previous post.

Terrible loss. The Moslem world has lost one of the few of its great authors.
Moslem culture is the cutlure of whining and yearning for Muhammed’s days, 1600 years ago. All this blood and gore for a state the size of NJ. It should be renamed George, be declared the country of Jews and Christians the doors slammed shut.
Islam is a mental illness and its adherents should be not punished, but I could live with the killing of the lunatics who taught such evil to Bin Laden and his ilk.
What in God’s name is the matter with you people? The world has had it up to here with u crazies.

You are the religion of death. If not for the Jews and Christians you would have no culture to speak. You contribute nothing; you make nothing. All the Christians should be dragged kicking and screaming out of the Middle East and the Moslims sent back. Come and kill me Moslim fanatics; I dare you.

Daniel: again it is clear that you are looking from the stereptyped image and thus you are part of the problem not solving it so you are free whether to look for the other side or not. I do not know who is fanatic now. Thanks for stopping by here!

You seem very reflected. I respect the way you write about this man, and although I’ve never heard of him before it seems he made a profound impact on you. I like what you wrote in an earlier comment; to be part of a solution instead of the problem. You and I might have very different views and religions, but we seem to agree on some very fundamental things!

Marc: I am glad that you were in touch somehow, and I agree with you that despite the controversials which I see normal, no body can deny his intellectual influence. Merci beaucoup pour votre visite sur ma blog et placer un commentaire.
