Earth Hour: Lights/OFF
[This blog entry is my post for participating in the Earth Hour event in 2009]

Earth Hour 2009 (Lights/OFF)
Yesterday I participated in global event of Earth Hour not only by switching the lights off but also by shutting down the electricity during the one hour event between 8:30-9:30 PM local time. Where I live, there was nothing but darkness except from a shy light that dances slowly from a sweet little candle placed on a small table.
In fact as preparing for this event, I decided to isolate myself from the mundane activity of being always connected to the world either by internet, mobile, or lights, and went through an experiment that I used to do from time to time which is simply hibernating myself into a cave of my own choice where nothing disturb me, so what happened?
Amazing period indeed! It was an excellent one to calmez-vous myself from any thoughts or negative energies that have been collected from the normal day. I started to do my prayers, followed by supplications, and ended with some mediations of my own.
When the one hour or so passed, I did not want to go back to the normal mood instantly however “c’est la vie (this is life)” as humans must return back to the daily life in order to be positive plus active; however this one hour was good enough for me to recharge my batteries for another period till the next hibernation. Consequently, as for the Earth Hour event, I see my personal experience is the minor scale of the major one; voting for the sake of our planet Earth via hibernating across the globe. Simply, whether the voting reached 1 billion or not, it is important to take real actions regarding the global climate warming issue because I am afraid that what we are doing today by our own choice might be out of our hands in the future if Kyoto Protocol is not implemented, improved and extended.
In a nutshell, I think this is the clear and vivid message Earth Hour event aims to send for the leaders during the Copenhagen’s Global Climate Change Conference in December 2009, so hopefully it will be understood and hence solving the global climate warming issue which means people can exists together and live in a better way on planet Earth in the 21st century!
Note + Update: more information about The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and this conference can be reached at UNFCCC website. Moreover, I shouted out loud “A Cry for Mankind on Earth!” for the Copenhagen’s conference on the occasion of opening it later this year.

I’m hoping that the message is beginning to penetrate further and wider. Some people still think the idea is that we save electricity for an hour. Well, we do, but the idea is to spread the message, to tell the people in this world to wake up and do something. A vote for life. There is no need to continue along the same path of spoiling and polluting this earth where we live.

Thank you for observing Earth Hour 2009. We also observed it … and, like you, we totally turned off the power at our house. It was wonderful … the quiet was peaceful and spending time with my family without the interruption of TV or computers was fabulous.
I also hope that the larger message will be received by the decision makers.
BTW … thank you for visiting Reduce Footprints. You probably saw my family’s other blog on blog explosion … that one is called “One A Day” and is primarily an art blog. Reduce Footprints is our other passion … easy ways to walk gently on the earth.
I enjoy your site!

Bonjour, Hicham! What a wonderful experience you had…isn’t it refreshing to just sit still and really listen to yourself? I agree, in such a chaotic world we live in, quieting ourselves, paying more attention to how we’re affecting our Earth, reflecting on how we could make this a better place to live in, should be our designated path instead of feeding our selfish desires. Yes, my dh + I are teaching our lil’ ones to be more respectful to Mother Earth. They understand that if we don’t take care of our Earth, our world may not be here for us. We try to conserve as much energy+water as we can. We recycle. We try not to waste. We try to spread the message. The Earth Hour experience has strenghten our beliefs that we must do more. Now, if only the bigger cats in higher offices can start rethinking how we can live more harmoniously with Earth instead of wasting time bickering about $ and pointing fingers at one another…our children’s children can enjoy such a life. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our lil’ world and sending kind+lovely thoughts. Really admire your blog-quite thought provoking and truly insightful! Peace, Jo;)

Yeah, that’s a wonderful night.
When there were no internet, no TV, no light, we talked more interesting things to each other face to face, That’s so great!

It always excites me and my family whenever we participate in activities that can somehow be of help to our Earth. Sadly though, when I looked out of my window while observing the earth hour, I didn’t see a single home that turned of their lights or at least used a candle. It was only for an hour but I guess some people just don’t want to do something they feel they won’t benefit from.
Anyway, I hope that the Earth hour will continue to be practiced at least once in a week or month by all of us.

I was a little disappointed. We turned everything off and went to this spot overlooking the city. I guess I’m overly optimistic, and thought that I would see lights shutting off and the city as a whole, getting dimmer. But nothing happened. I guess certain places can’t shut down though, so it sort of makes sense.

I wasn’t one of the followers of this tradition, simply because we have power cuts in my state every day. I wish we could find better sources of energy without polluting Mother Earth.

I was celebrating my buddy’s birthday when it happened, so we switched off the light, sang song, blew the candle and remained in the dark with few candles… quite cool!
