Alexa in BloggingLand

I enjoy blogging technical posts from time to time although it is out of my niche in order to break the routine and to give you breaks from my thoughts, so celebrate my dears like you do either in “Eid” and “Christmas” and it is a second technical post in row after the previous one so ‘Hurray’ my friends!

Smoke! In a previous post, I announced reaching a milestone for comments on my blog which is not bad for me and told you about spam comments too. In the matter of fact, I have stopped worrying about ‘Number of Comments’ I receive, ‘PageRank’ of my blog, ‘Alexa Rank’ of my domain, and all those type of worries that usually irritate other bloggers since I am concerned more about the quality of the content presented.

Nevertheless, I came across two posts over blogs for two of my online friends where they handled the alexa ranking issue in two different and opposite ways. In the matter of fact, I am not as much interested in discussing their opinions as in referring you to their posts so you can go further for reading what they have presented there in details. & this is why I choose the title of my post like that so please take a look at:

I have to mention that my way of not-to-worry about this issue has nothing to do either with being convinced or not convinced with such techniques in the blogsphere and websites in general since I am aware about the importance however this is my personal way to handle things.

Finally, I do not know whether I told you this before or not but I am happy with this awesome blogging software: WordPress. I might blog about this later but here you go!

Mashable’s 2009 Open Web Awards

Mashable announced its 3^rd annual “Open Web Awards” for the year 2009 which is an online voting for the innovations in web technology and achievements in social media. I am encouraging you to spend part of your time to participate and you can do so either by your ‘twitter account’ or ‘facebook account’.

Mashable's 2009 Open Web Awards The award has three phases; two of them are open for the people according to the time line announced as following:

Nomination: from 14^th of October to 15^th of November;
Voting: from 18^th of November to 13^th of December;
Announcement: On Tuesday, December 15^th, 2009.

When you sign-in, go for CATEGORIES and start nominating your candidates. If you want to nominate any locals, just go for the category that have the term ‘local’ in its name; for example: Best Local Blog, Best Local News Site, etc. As for me, I already placed my nominations and eager to see the list of nominees.

Blog Milestone: Comments

I am still celebrating the 3^rd anniversary of having my own domain. In a previous post, I told you about my criteria of dealing with themes generally and the new theme implemented for this anniversary specially. In this post, I am sharing a milestone with you that seem funny yet might be helpful for you.

Smoke! Yesterday comments on my blog reached a milestone number of 1,000 with 42,700 visits and a sum of 158,625 total hits. Hereby, I want to thank my dear readers and bloggers who are keeping their eye on my blog and have enriched me with their impressions: “ Thank You” for your visits + valuable comments.

Nevertheless, the other side of the coin tell us that my blog also reached another milestone in terms of the number of spam comments reached 11,645 with an average of 2,000 comments per month!

Fighting Comments Spam

My blog is a ‘DoFollow’ one after certain number of comment(s) since long time ago, so I am not surprised by this number of spam. Hence, I am fighting comments by the following three ways:

Activating ‘Akismet’ plug-in that came with WordPress;
Moderating comments to delete irrelevant ones to any post;
Depending on spam-fighting plug-ins.

This way ensures that the blog is neither linking to a bad neighbourhoods nor having irrelevant comment to my niche and for that matter I want to highlight on the point that link-dropping is not acceptable here because the idea of comments is enriching the post plus interacting with the reader; not to place ‘thank you’ or ‘smart comment’ just to have a back-link.
