Blog Milestone: Comments
I am still celebrating the 3rd anniversary of having my own domain. In a previous post, I told you about my criteria of dealing with themes generally and the new theme implemented for this anniversary specially. In this post, I am sharing a milestone with you that seem funny yet might be helpful for you.
Yesterday comments on my blog reached a milestone number of 1,000 with 42,700 visits and a sum of 158,625 total hits. Hereby, I want to thank my dear readers and bloggers who are keeping their eye on my blog and have enriched me with their impressions: “ Thank You” for your visits + valuable comments.
Nevertheless, the other side of the coin tell us that my blog also reached another milestone in terms of the number of spam comments reached 11,645 with an average of 2,000 comments per month!
Fighting Comments Spam
My blog is a ‘DoFollow’ one after certain number of comment(s) since long time ago, so I am not surprised by this number of spam. Hence, I am fighting comments by the following three ways:
- Activating ‘Akismet’ plug-in that came with WordPress;
- Moderating comments to delete irrelevant ones to any post;
- Depending on spam-fighting plug-ins.
This way ensures that the blog is neither linking to a bad neighbourhoods nor having irrelevant comment to my niche and for that matter I want to highlight on the point that link-dropping is not acceptable here because the idea of comments is enriching the post plus interacting with the reader; not to place ‘thank you’ or ‘smart comment’ just to have a back-link.
Comments Resources
Whether your WordPress blog is self-hosted on your domain, or hosted on WordPress.com, it is valuable enough to keep an eye. Hence, for more elaborations about this, I do advice checking the following resources over other blogs by friends who I am enjoying their blogs:
- You source to know about Akismet, Spam Filters and Comment Moderation over Kikoklani by Kristi;
- A How to Prevent Comment Spam over TechJaws.com by Frank;
- Your guide for Selecting a Bloggers Forum over One Cool Site by TimeTheif.

Thank you so much for your infromatiove post and also for linking to my post Selecting a Bloggers Forum. May I please mention three other things for the benefit of your readers, please?
(1) I have used both Akismet and Defensio and have found that they perform equally well when it comes to spam filtering. Defensio is also a free spam filter for self hosted wordpress sites and can be found here http://defensio.com/downloads
(2) I recommend the use of the Bad Neigborhood Llink Checker for tracing trackbacks, pingbacks and also for checks on our own sites.
Text Link Checker Tool – Text links are an important factor in today’s search engine optimization, and exchanging links with other websites is a good way to get them. However, doing a link exchange with a website that is penalized can have some detrimental results.This tool will scan the links on your website, and on the pages that your website is linking to, and flag possible problem areas. This can greatly ease your seo efforts. http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm
(3) I have posted a Comment Policy so I have made it clear which comments will or will not be posted, and what to do in the event a blogger finds their comment has not been posted.

If it wasn’t for Akismet I probably would have given up blogging a long time ago – spam is a plague in the virtual world. That plug-in is such a time saver.
Congratulations on passing the 1,000 comment mark! That’s a lot of comments! Looking forward to another 3 years with you!

Ian: thanks for your wishes although 1,000 might seem low if compared with other blogs but my content is not that much yet because I am concentrating on the quality not quantity so by ratio 1,000 is good as of writing the post. On the other hand, Beside Akismet, there are also aiding plug-ins either what I mentioned in the post or what TimeThief mentioned in her comment. Happy bloging.

Meam: The more spam the more popular. However since ’spammers’ & ‘bots’ are targeting you therefore more attention is required. As for your blog (shininghistory) I am sure that it is on the way of being more so keep up on the good work; I am glad that I found it the last month

EJ: 15,000 Comments?! Hey I already achieved 11,645 ’spam’ comment
Anyway I don’t think my blog is attracting that much of ‘real’ comments (yet) but as I told in the post entitled Alexa in BloggingLand that I do not that worry about number of comments anymore!
