Beauty and the Beast
How many times did you hear questions like these: “Are you beautiful?” - “Is she beautiful?” - “Is he handsome?”
Oh! Please don’t count! These questions are very common in our daily life because beauty is one of the magical words in the human vocabulaire, regardless the language, since humans tend to seek things that satisfies their senses with pleasure.
This perspective is typically formulated within what so called “outer beauty” which simply the attributes of a human that are being perceived by others. Hereby “beauty idols” arouses that people not merely iconize through out history but also are called to follow as their roll models.
This is why humans usually put a weight on how someone looks and this can be clearly figured out in work environments while applying for jobs -especially females- as some people seek to employ “attractive looking” people which is a global trend regardless the society and culture.
I however really wonder: is ‘outer beauty’ the only item that we should take into consideration while dealing with each others and forget about other items over the check-list? My answer is definitely No!
I find the trend of preaching “beauty idols” is simply strange because it contradicts with the diversity of humans and uniqueness of every individual person living on this planet. You can’t simply portray humans into one category according to your specifications and who fails to meet the qualifications is simply out or in other words “ugly” either in race or colour.
C’Mon! Such perspective discriminates the human nature generally and women ones especially because the diversity of human being is the key of interaction; that we may know each other and understand each other.
Consequently, in the case of women, they are humans who have the right to be respected and such respecting is simply by rejecting this silly stereotyped baby-dolls image because there is a complete difference between attraction/seduction and real beauty. Furthermore, the relation between Man and Woman is supposed to be upgraded from the “Male-Female” duet as the later one is found only in a relationship which is frame worked within Islam into “Marriage”.
“Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”, so ‘real beauty’ from my perspective has nothing to do at all with the external attributes; it rather deals with reaching the equilibrium state where balance and harmony occurs between sayings and doings of someone and this is how I consider someone beautiful or ugly away from the intentions as we can not –and are not called to- seek after them.
In a nutshell, according to this perspective, everyone can achieve beauty as much as he/she wants to do so not the media-preached outer-beauty only. This is why I don’t wonder why Islam told that “piety” is the criteria judging people from Allah (GOD) not from people!

Edundayo, thanks a lot for your thoughtful insight and it’s all about mentalities my friend. I wonder how can somebody reject another one on the base of the look?! Disgusting isn’t it?

You are simply right my friend, it’s all about mentalities. You called it “Disgusting”, that was even an understatement.

Unfortunately it’s always been like that. The majority of people on this planet do not ask themselves what the life purpose is or are we alone in the universe or (close to the subject) is someone’s pretty on the inside or not. This is why women in order to get the best men make themselves artificially beautiful on the outside - the inside doesn’t matter. And men also look only at the exterior - the prettier the better. Sad really.
